I May Be Big But I Didn't Cause That Solar Eclipse is award-winning Canadian humorist Gordon Kirkland's fifth book. Three of his previous books received Canada's prestigious literary award, The Stephen Leacock Award of Merit For Humour. His syndicated newspaper column. Gordon Kirkland At Large, is enjoyed by readers in the United States and Canada every week. He is also a frequent guest on radio and television shows in both countries. In addition, he is in great demand as a speaker at conferences, conventions, and festivals throughout North America. An April 2006 profile of Kirkland in the Canadian edition of Reader's Digest said, "Kirkland's specialty is making others laugh at him, at themselves, and at life in general." In this book, Kirkland once again takes on subjects ranging from marriage to dealing with a canine companion. He looks at the odd events of daily life, and even finds humor in the experiences of moving and having a serious illness.

First off, I have to say - I am not Canadian nor American. A mere humble Brit who now lives in New Zealand. Having been visited Canada (both coasts) I love their humour and outlook on life, and the author represents this well in these memoirs. At the risk of of complaint, I find Canadians more down to earth than their American cousins, and less prone to - well, being a little over the top when trying to make a point. I think we could all relate to some of the day to day issues he describes, showing he has not bowed to the temptation to go over the top in order to elicit an out and out belly laugh. I suspect other authors may have taken that route, and although the result would have been funny, it would not have been endearing or believable.
The stories have a good balance of making you think "I know exactly where you are coming from!" and letting out a wee chuckle - just enough to make your partner peer over at what you are reading, but without a silent glare as they feel the need to turn the volume up on the TV

Recommended? Yes - if you like to read about real life described with a humerous twist. No if you want to read lots of jokes and punchlines. There are a few good one liners but the stories are not built around them - they just fit naturally.
Have a few more on my to read list from this author and I am glad I took the risk of buying three of four blind (before reading this one).

Ol' Gord has done it again. If laughter really does prolong life, his readers may well be nearly immortal. They (and I) will certainly enjoy life more for reading this book.
Good book. Worth the read.
This book was great. The authur has a way of making you laugh at everyday life. He includes making fun of himself and it is sooo intertaining. If he ever has a book signing in my area, I will be there to meet him. Most of what he writes you can relate to yourself or someone in your family. All around good family reading.
Funny all the way through. I enjoyed the stories about his family. I give this book a super rating - glad I bought it and would recommend it to all. His style is comfortable and witty so as you go through the book you are never bored. If writing gets boring for him he could do stand-up comedy. Must Read this one.
I give Mr. Kirkland 4 stars! An enjoyable book, light reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who could use a chuckle or two mixed with the everyday things in life you deal with. Mr. Kirkland also mentions his terrible accident by a distracted driver which left him not quite as agile as most, with this in mind he stays positive which is uplifting for the reader. I have enjoyed Mr. Kirkland's other books as well and will continue to do just that!
This is the second Kirkland book I've read, and while not as humorous as my previous reading, it's still worth the effort. I enjoy learning about my authors and Gordon responds generously revealing aspects of his family life and experiences. Along the way there are humorous asides that will make the reader smile and give a lighthearted chuckle. Check it out!
OK, let me start by saying I had no clue who Gordon Kirkland was. Poor european me, never heard of him, never read his columns before. BUT I'm a huge fan of Erma Bombeck. When looking for columnists with wit and humor similar to Erma's, I read about Mr Kirkland. I checked his books and decided to buy When my mind wanders it brings back souvenirs, without even trying a sample first! (me, brave!) I couldn't put it down, I kept on repeating to myself OK, just one more column, just one more... until I finished the whole thing without noticing.
Charming, witty, the kind of intelligent humor that makes you laugh aloud. No bad words or unappropiate content needed to make us laugh, ladies and gentlemen, just a pure optimistic, humoristic view of everydays life. Love the stories about his dogs and his family and every single anecdote is purely hilarious.
After "When my mind..." I bought everything I could find in kindle, I Think I'm Having One Of Those Decades, I May Be Big But I didn't Cause That Solar Eclipse and Holly Jolly Frivolity and adored every column in them. I just got myself Justice Is Blind - And Her Dog Just Peed In My Cornflakes and Never Stand Behind A Loaded Horse in paperback (why no kindle edition!!!) and I'm ready for laughing marathon this weekend.
It may seem I've been bought by the writer to say only nice things but I haven't, as a proof let me say I didn't appreciate his novel Crossbow, where I couldn't find the Gordon Kirkland I've learned to love.
